Creating a Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is one of the most effective ways to increase your online visibility. It’s FREE and helps your business appear in Google Search and Maps, making it easier for potential customers to find and contact you.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you set it up:

Step 1: Visit Google Business Profile

  1. Open your web browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, etc.)

Step 2: Sign in or Create a Google Account

  • If you already have a Google account (such as Gmail or YouTube), sign in.

  • If not, click "Get Started" and follow the instructions to set up a free Gmail account.

Step 3: Enter Your Business Name

  • Type your business name exactly as you want it to appear on Google.

  • If your business already exists on Google, you’ll be prompted to claim it.

Step 4: Choose Your Business Category

  • Begin typing a word that describes your business (e.g., “Hair Salon” or “Auto Detailing”)

  • Google will suggest categories, select the category that best matches your services.

Tip: You can add additional categories later if needed.

Step 5: Add Your Business Location (Optional)

  • If you have a physical location where customers visit, select "Yes" and enter your address.

  • If you don't have a physical location and serve customers at their location or online, select "No" and provide your service areas.

Step 6: Add Contact Information

  • Enter a phone number so customers can reach you.

  • Add your website if you have one (optional).

Tip: If you don’t have a website, Google allows you to create one for free during setup.

Step 7: Verify Your Business

Google requires verification to confirm your business is legitimate and prevent spam. Methods may include:

  • Postcard by mail (arrives in 5–14 days).

  • Email (available for some businesses).

  • Phone call or text (if eligible, you’ll get a code via call or SMS).

Important: Enter the verification code as soon as you receive it to activate your profile.

Step 8: Add Your Business Hours

  • Set your opening and closing hours so customers know when to visit or call.

  • Include special hours for holidays or events, if needed.

Step 9: Add Photos and Logo

  • Upload a high-quality profile image such as your logo or storefront.

  • Include photos of your space, team, and services

Tip: Listings with photos receive 42% more clicks!

Step 10: Write a Business Description

  • Briefly describe what your business offers and why customers should choose you (150-750 characters).

  • Keep it clear, engaging, and include relevant keywords.
Example: “We provide top-rated massage therapy in downtown Seattle"

Step 11: Start Posting & Managing Your Profile

Once your profile is live, keep it active by:

  • Responding to customer reviews

  • Posting updates and promotions

  • Answering questions submitted by potential clients

Tip: Regularly updating your profile helps improve visibility in search results.

Final Step: Check How Your Business Looks Like on Google

Search your business name on Google to view how your profile appears. You should now be visible in Google Search.

Congratulations—your Google Business Profile is live!
